Welcome Friends!

Welcome to the Durant Iowa Food Pantry (DIFP)! We’re a community-focused organization dedicated to offering a hand-up by providing fresh, nutritious food to our neighbors in need. At DIFP, we believe in fostering a respectful and empowering environment. That’s why we operate with a consumer-choice model, allowing you to select the items that best fit your household’s needs – just like shopping at a grocery store. Our friendly volunteers are here to ensure a welcoming and comfortable experience for everyone, reflecting our culture of compassion, dignity, and support.
Many people find themselves needing assistance for various reasons, and we want you to know you’re not alone. Common reasons people make the personal decision to visit their local food pantry include unexpected job loss, reduced work hours, medical and healthcare costs, rising living costs impacting grocery budgets, unexpected bills, medical emergencies, or simply struggling to make ends meet while paying for other necessities like rent and utilities. Our friendly volunteers are here to ensure a welcoming and comfortable experience for everyone, reflecting our culture of compassion, dignity, and support, no matter your circumstances.
Your First Visit: What to Expect
We understand that visiting a food pantry for the first time can feel a little intimidating, but please know that we’re here to help, and you’ll be met with understanding and kindness. Here’s a brief overview of what you can expect during your visit:
- Warm Welcome & Intake: You’ll be greeted with a smile by one of our friendly volunteers. They’ll guide you through a simple, quick, and confidential in-take process (no ID or proof of income required).
- Grocery-Style Shopping: We’ll explain how our shopping experience works, which is just like being in a grocery store. You’ll be invited to browse our aisles and choose the items that best fit your family’s needs from a variety of fresh produce, pantry staples, and other essentials.
- Weigh Out for Impact: Instead of paying, your selected food items will be weighed out by a volunteer. This isn’t because we want to know how much food you individually received, but rather so we can accurately report the total impact our pantry is having on the community. It helps us secure more resources to keep providing for everyone!
- Leave Feeling Supported & Appreciated: Our goal is to make your visit as easy and comfortable as possible, ensuring you leave with the food your family needs. When you depart, we want you to feel genuinely welcomed, supported, and know that we truly appreciate the opportunity to help you and your family.
We’re here to support you every step of the way!
